Bluefish top Linux HTML editor
Jan. 12, 2009

Bluefish, long-favored among DesktopLinux editors, has come out tops in a "shoot-out" between seven different text editing software packages for Linux. Evaluated in the context of HTML authoring, Bluefish is praised for its broad multi-language support, built-in reference material, and ease of use.

Somewhat overlooked in the fairly brief review is Bluefish's customizability. While we agree with the reviewer that the software looks "overcrowded" in stock form, we find it very easy to modify the toolbars to include only those features we use routinely.

Also not mentioned -- Bluefish's macro tools are a blessing, saving us from typing frequently used code strings, and from having to do frequent search/replace operations manually. Search-and-replace in general is another Bluefish strength.

As Bluefish users for about 10 years, our only complaints with the tool have been poor performance with super-long lines, glitches with search-and-replaces involving quotes (seems fixed in recent versions), and a "recent documents" menu item that, frankly, must be laughed at on every attempted use. But, who uses one of those, anyway? We like Bluefish so much, we use it for just about everything.

Other editors included in the review include:
  • Amaya (egad)
  • OpenOffice (surprisingly, not horrific)
  • Quanta Plus (good if you favor KDE)
  • Screem (not for beginners)
  • Kompozer (good for novices, evolved from Nvu
  • Mozilla's Composer (aging)
The review is here. And, to Olivier and the rest of the Bluefish team, "Thanks for all the fish."
