Sams Publishing has published a 2010 version of its book Ubuntu Unleashed for Karmic Koala and Lucid Lynx releases. The publisher also launched an Ubuntu Linux Starter Kit combination book and boxed distribution, and has updated A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming.
Sams Publishing's Ubuntu Unleashed 2010 Edition provides detailed information on installing, using, and administering both Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and the upcoming Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) on a workstation or a server, says Sams Publishing. Written by Andrew Hudson, Paul Hudson, Matthew Helmke, and Ryan Troy, this 864-page fifth edition of the book appears to be aimed at the intermediate- to advanced-level user.
 Ubuntu Unleashed 2010 Edition offers details on Ubuntu’s desktop and productivity software, as well as how to configure the desktop to run smoothly using multiple printers and shell scripts, says the publisher. Advanced topics are said to include coverage of the X Window system, Linux programming, web server administration, and network administration.

 A bundled DVD includes the full Ubuntu 9.10 distribution for Intel x86 computers, says Sams Publishing. The DVD is said to include a full copy of OpenOffice, as well as hundreds of other programs and utilities. Customers who purchase Ubuntu Unleashed 2010 Edition in 2010 can receive a free Ubuntu 10.04 Upgrade Kit by mail after Ubuntu 10.04 is released on April 29 (U.S. or Canada only).
Ubuntu Linux Starter Kit
Sams Publishing also recently published an Ubuntu Linux Starter Kit. The product is both a book and a boxed distribution that includes Ubuntu Linux 9.10 on DVD. The DVD offers a dual-boot option, as well as applications including OpenOffice, Firefox, and Thunderbird, says Sams.
The 112-page quick-start guide booklet is said to offer step-by-step installation instructions and a concise overview of Ubuntu's basic workings. Written by the Sams Publishing staff, the booklet covers topics include installing Ubuntu, using Ubuntu on the desktop, and advanced usage and management.
Linux "Practical Guide" updated
In November, Sams published the second edition of Mark Sobell's A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming under its Prentice Hall Professional imprint. Aimed at advanced Linux users, this 1,080-page book covers topics including utilities, the file-system, the shell, the Vim editor, the Emacs editor, the "Bourne Again" shell, and the TC shell. The book is also said to cover Perl scripting, the AWK pattern processing language, the Sed editor, and the Rsync secure copy utility.
Availability
The Ubuntu Unleashed 2010 Edition is available now for $45 ($36 for the e-book or $60 for both print and e-book), and the same pricing holds for A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming, says Sams Publishing. The Ubuntu Linux Starter Kit is said to be available for $36.
